Painters in Wendouree

Painters Ballarat paints homes throughout Wendouree, Ballarat's second-largest suburb. Much of the housing is post-war: 1950s and early 60s timber and concrete-veneer homes from the Housing Commission era, plus brick veneer from the 1970s on. We repaint interiors and exteriors, roofs and fences, and we handle unit complexes. Request a free quote.

Wendouree sits about 5 km north-west of the CBD, around Howitt Street and Gillies Street. It grew fast after the war, when the State Housing Commission laid out a large estate from 1949 to house workers for Ballarat's new factories. That area became Wendouree West, and a lot of its 1950s houses are still standing, many now privately owned and overdue for a repaint.

The rest of the suburb filled in through the 60s, 70s and 80s with brick veneer on quarter-acre and smaller blocks. Add Stockland Wendouree, the showgrounds, Mars Stadium and the Ballarat Sports and Events Centre and you have a suburb that keeps our painters busy with everyday house repaints and the odd commercial job.

Local knowledge

Painting in Wendouree

Howitt Street is the main commercial spine, with Gillies Street carrying a mix of shops and community services. Residential streets north of Howitt include the Wendouree West estate, where more than 400 government-owned houses were remodelled under a renewal program in the 2000s. Those houses are mostly small, single-storey, with timber or sheet cladding and low-pitched iron roofs.

South and east of Howitt Street, towards the lake and Ballarat North, the housing is more varied: 1960s cream brick, 1970s brown brick veneer, and townhouses on subdivided blocks. The former St Mary's Redemptorist Monastery has been converted to apartments. Hollioake Park and the Wendouree West Recreation Reserve are the main open spaces.

Wendouree borders Lake Wendouree and Ballarat North to the south, Soldiers Hill to the south-east, Mitchell Park and Invermay Park to the north, and Miners Rest further out. It sits on flat ground at about 440 m, so frost is frequent in winter and exterior work is best planned for the warmer months. Note the postcode is 3355, not 3350.

FAQ

Wendouree painting questions

Is lead paint a problem on older Wendouree homes?

It can be. Houses built before 1970 often have lead-based paint on exterior timber, windows and doors. We test suspect surfaces first and, if lead is present, use wet-scraping and containment rather than dry sanding, and dispose of the waste correctly. It adds a little time but keeps your family and garden safe.

Can you paint a rental property in Wendouree between tenants?

Yes, and we do a lot of them. A typical three-bedroom interior takes two to three days once the house is empty. Tell us your vacancy window when you request a quote and we will fit the job in, including patching nail holes and scuffs and matching an existing neutral colour.
