Ballarat North is about 3 km from the CBD, between Howitt Street in the south and the Western Freeway and Ballarat General Cemetery in the north. The Mildura railway line forms the western edge and Doodts Road the eastern. It is mostly residential with some older industrial land that is being redeveloped.
The housing changes as you move north. Near Soldiers Hill the streets have period weatherboards and brick villas. Further up, around Norman Street and Lydiard Street North, it is mostly detached houses from the 1950s through the 80s, with a fair number of modern townhouses dropped in on subdivided blocks. One suburb, three quite different painting jobs.
Local knowledge
Painting in Ballarat North
Lydiard Street North, Doveton Street North and Howitt Street are the main streets. The pocket between Doveton and Lydiard is the most sought after, with wide streets, established gardens and views back over the CBD from the higher ground. The suburb is one of the higher parts of Ballarat, which brings wind exposure on the north and west sides of houses.
Housing is predominantly detached 1950s to 1980s: cream and red brick veneer, timber-framed windows (later aluminium), tiled or corrugated iron roofs. There are still heritage cottages along the southern edge and a growing number of two-storey townhouses. Owner-occupiers who stay long term make up most of the residents, so repaints here are often whole-house jobs done properly rather than quick rental refreshes.
Neighbours are Wendouree, Invermay Park and Nerrina to the north, and Black Hill, Lake Wendouree and Soldiers Hill to the south. The North Ballarat Football Club takes its name from the suburb, though its home ground, Mars Stadium, is across the line in Wendouree.

FAQ
Ballarat North painting questions
What is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in Ballarat North?
October to April. Ballarat North sits on high ground and gets cold, wet winters with frequent frost, so exterior paint struggles to cure between May and September. Interior work runs all year. If you want an exterior done in spring, request a quote in winter so you are on the list early.
Can you repaint the aluminium windows on my 1980s house?
Yes. Anodised or powder-coated aluminium frames can be repainted once they are cleaned, lightly abraded and primed with an adhesion primer made for metal. The result is durable if the prep is right. It is a good way to update a brown or bronze 1980s frame without replacing the windows.
