Painters in Golden Point

Painters Ballarat paints homes across Golden Point, the old goldfields suburb around Sovereign Hill. Most houses are period miners cottages and Victorian homes, weatherboard or brick, with modern infill on the odd-shaped blocks. We do weatherboard exteriors, heritage trims, interiors and fences. Golden Point is about 2 km south-east of the CBD, wrapped around Sovereign Hill and the Gold Museum. It was one of the first places gold was dug in Ballarat, and the street pattern still follows the old miners' right leases: irregular lots, undulating ground, and Barkly Street as the spine with Grant Street running east-west.

The housing is mostly c.1900 miners cottages and Victorian houses, with Federation and interwar homes mixed in and newer builds filling the gaps. The Mount Pleasant/Golden Point heritage precinct (HO173) covers much of it. Our painters handle the timber-heavy exteriors, heritage trims and the interiors that come with homes of this age.

Local knowledge

Painting in Golden Point

Typical houses here are single-storey weatherboard or brick with hipped or gabled roofs in iron or terracotta. Fences are timber or brick, and garages tend to sit behind the facade. Some streets on the higher ground have views across to the city skyline. The Yarrowee River marks the western boundary.

Landmarks include Sovereign Hill on Magpie Street, the Poverty Point memorial, the Grapes Hotel at Humffray and Grant Streets, Llanberris Reserve, the Ballarat East Bowling Club (1904) and Magazine Hill. There is still an operating gold mine beneath parts of the suburb, which residents sometimes notice as blasting.

Golden Point borders Ballarat Central and Bakery Hill to the north, Ballarat East to the east, Canadian to the east and south-east, and Mount Pleasant and Redan to the south and south-west. About 86 per cent of dwellings are separate houses, so our work is mostly whole-house exteriors and interior repaints for owner-occupiers.

FAQ

Golden Point painting questions

Does the Golden Point heritage precinct restrict paint colours?

No. The Mount Pleasant/Golden Point precinct (HO173) is a residential precinct without external paint controls, so repainting an already painted house in any colour needs no permit. Individually listed buildings, and painting unpainted brick or stone, are treated differently, so check with City of Ballarat in those cases before you start.

My cottage has cracks from ground movement. Can you fix those before painting?

Yes. Golden Point sits on old mining ground and some houses show hairline cracks in plaster or render. We rake out and fill cracks with a flexible filler, tape and set larger plasterboard cracks, and use a flexible primer before topcoats. If cracks are wide or keep moving, we will suggest a builder looks at the footings first.
