Brown Hill sits on the eastern edge of Ballarat, about 4 km from the CBD, and is almost entirely residential. The freeway cuts it in two. South of it is the older part of the suburb, where gold-rush era cottages and renovated period homes sit on the streets off Humffray Street North and Victoria Street. North of it are the newer subdivisions, with larger blocks and houses from the 1990s onward.
That split shapes the painting work. On the south side we are usually repainting weatherboards, fixing timber windows and refreshing interiors in older homes. On the north side it is more often first repaints of brick veneer and render, Colorbond gutters and fascias, and fence and deck work.
Local knowledge
Painting in Brown Hill
The suburb was settled in 1851 by the prospector William Brownbill, and the name is a worn-down version of "Brownbill's Hill". It takes in the Woodmans Hill area and has a lot of open space for its size: Mount Xavier Golf Course, Progress Park, the 25 m outdoor pool, and the sporting grounds used by local clubs. Ballarat Secondary College, Caledonian Primary and St Francis Xavier are all in the suburb.
Housing is a mix. Humffray Street North and the streets running off it still have single-fronted miners cottages, some untouched and some renovated. There is a lot of infill going on, with older blocks split for units and townhouses. Across the freeway the newer estates run up towards Nerrina and Glen Park, with the usual mix of brick veneer, render and Colorbond roofing.
Neighbours are Ballarat East to the south and west, Black Hill and Nerrina to the north-west, and Gong Gong and Warrenheip out to the east. The suburb is on the rural-urban fringe, so parts of it back onto bush and paddocks, and the eastern end gets more wind exposure than the city streets.

FAQ
Brown Hill painting questions
Are Brown Hill homes under a heritage overlay?
Some individual properties near Ballarat East are, but most of Brown Hill is not in a heritage precinct. Repainting an existing painted surface in the same colour needs no permit in any case. If your cottage is individually listed, check the City of Ballarat heritage maps before changing colours. We can help you read the listing.
How long does an exterior repaint take on a Brown Hill weatherboard?
A typical single-storey weatherboard takes about a week to ten days of work, depending on how much rot repair and scraping is needed. Weather matters too: Ballarat winters are cold and wet, so exterior work is easier between October and April. We will give a realistic timeline with your quote.
