Lucas was gazetted in June 2011 on former farmland cut from Cardigan, about 7 km west of the CBD. It is named for Eleanor Lucas and the Lucas Girls, the textile workers who planted the Avenue of Honour after the First World War. The developer Integra began selling lots in 2012, and it has been one of the fastest-growing estates in regional Victoria since.

The Lucas Town Centre with Coltman Plaza (Woolworths and around ten smaller shops) sits at the middle, with parks and walking paths threaded through the estate. Homes are single and double storey, mostly slab on ground, with rendered or face-brick walls, feature cladding panels and Colorbond roofing. The oldest are now coming up to their first full repaint.

Local knowledge

Painting in Lucas

Because the whole suburb is one generation old, the painting issues are consistent: hairline cracking and dirt on acrylic render, fading on dark Colorbond roofs and fences, builders' single-coat interiors that mark easily, and timber or composite decks and pergolas that were never properly sealed. There is no heritage overlay and no old timber to worry about.

The land is flat and open with young street trees, so there is little shade. West and north walls get full sun and the prevailing westerly wind comes straight across the paddocks, which is why render and dark trims on those elevations fade first.

Lucas borders Alfredton to the east, Delacombe to the south-east, Cardigan to the west and north, and Lake Gardens and Bunkers Hill at its corners. Around 3,000 people lived here at the 2021 census and the number keeps climbing as stages are released.

FAQ

Lucas painting questions

Is it too early to repaint a house built in 2015?

No. A 2015 house is around ten years old, which is about when single-coat builder render and trim paint starts to look chalky, and interiors show every mark. A proper two-coat repaint now protects the render and lets you pick colours you actually like. Request a quote and we will tell you what needs doing and what can wait.

Can you help choose exterior colours for a Lucas home?

Yes. Many Lucas estates have design guidelines that shaped the original palette, but those usually only apply to the initial build. We can suggest schemes that suit the facade style, test sample patches on the house, and steer you away from very dark colours on full-sun west walls where fading is fastest.
