Fences are the thing people mean to do themselves and never get to. A long run of palings takes a weekend or three with a brush, and the result is usually patchy. We do it in a day or two with a sprayer and back-brushing, with the prep done first so the finish lasts. It is one of the cheaper jobs on the list and one of the biggest visual changes to a front yard.

Timber fences in Ballarat go silver-grey within a couple of years of going up if they are left bare, and the cycle of wet winters and hot summers opens up the grain and loosens palings. A coat of fence paint or an exterior stain slows all that down and makes the fence look intentional. Picket fences on older homes usually want a painted finish in white or a period colour to match the house; paling fences often suit a solid stain or a dark fence paint that hides the variation in timber.

We also repaint faded Colorbond fencing, steel and aluminium gates, and rendered or block retaining walls. Anything that bounds a yard, basically.

Process

How the job is done

  1. 01

    Look and quote

We measure the run, check the condition of the timber or metal, and suggest paint or stain. Written quote follows quickly.

  2. 02

    Clean and repair

Pressure wash to lift grey fibres, mould and old flaking finish; refix loose palings, replace split ones, let the timber dry.

  3. 03

    Protect the surroundings

Plants, paths, neighbours' sides and cars masked or covered before any spraying starts.

  4. 04

    Spray and back-brush

Fence paint or stain sprayed for speed and worked in by brush so it penetrates the grain and covers the gaps between palings. Two coats on bare timber.

  5. 05

    Tidy up

Masking off, site cleaned, gates checked and rehung if needed.

Local knowledge

Fence Painting in Ballarat

Most Ballarat fences are treated pine palings, and the newer estates in Lucas, Alfredton and Delacombe have kilometres of them, all going grey at about the same rate. A dark fence paint or solid stain applied once the timber has weathered for a few months makes a big difference and is cheap per metre. On the older streets the fences are more often pickets or lapped-and-capped timber, and they are usually painted to match the house trims.

Frost is the enemy of fence finishes here. Water that sits in the end grain on the top of palings and posts freezes and splits the timber, which is why we pay attention to capping rails and seal the tops. Stains should go on in the warmer months when the timber is dry; painting a damp fence in July is a waste of money and we will say so.

Pricing

What it costs

Fence painting is priced per metre of fence, by height, whether one or both sides are done, the finish (stain is faster than paint on bare timber), the condition (grey weathered timber needs more cleaning and soaks up more product), the number of palings to replace, and how much masking the surroundings need. Picket fences cost more per metre than palings because of the detail. Small front-fence jobs are often done alongside an exterior or deck job for a better combined price. FAQ

Fence Painting questions

Should I paint or stain a timber fence?

Stain soaks into the timber, shows some grain, fades gradually and is easy to recoat without scraping. Paint sits on top, gives a solid colour, hides timber variation and lasts longer between coats, but peels when it does fail and needs more prep to redo. Palings usually suit a solid stain or fence paint; pickets on period homes usually suit paint.

How long does a fence finish last in Ballarat?

A good exterior stain on a paling fence typically needs a recoat every three to five years, sooner on the sunny side. A quality fence paint on well-prepped timber can go five to eight years. Sealing the tops of palings and posts and keeping soil and mulch off the bottom rail both help. Frost and full western sun are what shorten it.

Do you paint both sides of the fence?

If you want us to and your neighbour agrees. Painting the neighbour's side is common on front and side boundary fences and we quote it per side so you can decide. We protect their garden and paths the same as yours and will let them know what day we are coming if you prefer.

Can you paint a new fence straight away?

Treated pine palings are best left to weather for a few weeks to a few months so the treatment chemicals and surface moisture settle, then cleaned and coated. A water-based stain or fence paint applied after that first weathering period will last much better than one put on green timber. We can time the job to suit.

Can a faded Colorbond fence be repainted?

Yes. The panels are washed, any scratches or rust spots treated and primed, then two coats of a suitable metal-compatible exterior paint are sprayed on. It brings back a uniform colour and can also change the colour entirely. It is a lot cheaper than replacing the fence and the finish lasts well if the prep is right.
