Ballarat East is where the goldfield started in 1851 and where the Eureka Stockade stood in 1854. It kept its own council until 1921, and it still feels different from the gridded west side: the streets bend, blocks are odd shapes from the old miners' right leases, and there are bluestone channels along the kerbs.

For painters that means lots of timber. Weatherboard cottages with hipped iron roofs, timber casement and double-hung windows, verandahs with turned posts and brackets. Many have been renovated; plenty have not. Our work here is mostly full exterior repaints with rot repair, plus interior jobs on lath-and-plaster walls and pressed-metal ceilings.

Local knowledge

Painting in Ballarat East

The suburb runs east from Bakery Hill along Victoria Street (the dual carriageway that brings traffic in from the freeway), with Humffray Street, Main Road, Barkly Street and Eureka Street as the other spines. Eastern Oval with its Edwardian grandstands, the Ballarat East Fire Station on Barkly Street, the old civic buildings at Barkly and East Streets, the Wildlife Park and the Eureka Centre are the landmarks.

Two heritage precincts cover much of the housing. The Eureka Street precinct has a mix of late 1850s to 1940s buildings, with a strong run of small Victorian and vernacular timber cottages. The Humffray Street precinct, on the western side, has the smallest blocks and the densest run of single-storey weatherboards. Neither precinct has external paint controls, so like-for-like repainting needs no permit, but check with City of Ballarat if you want to change colours on a listed house.

Ballarat East borders Soldiers Hill, Black Hill and Brown Hill to the north, Golden Point and Canadian to the south, and Eureka and Warrenheip to the east. Mature street trees and grassy verges are common, which means shade and leaf litter on south-facing walls. Some old mining ground has arsenic in the soil, so we avoid dry-sanding paint onto bare ground and keep drop sheets down.

FAQ

Ballarat East painting questions

Do I need a permit to repaint my Ballarat East cottage?

For a like-for-like repaint, no. The Eureka Street and Humffray Street heritage precincts in Ballarat East do not have external paint controls, so repainting in the same colours needs no permit. If your house is individually listed, or you want to paint brick that has never been painted, check with City of Ballarat planning first.

How do you handle rotten weatherboards before painting?

We replace boards that are soft or split rather than filling them, splice new timber into sills and verandah posts where needed, and fill smaller checks with a two-part exterior filler. All bare timber gets an oil-based or quality acrylic primer before two topcoats. Skipping this is why cheap repaints peel within a couple of years.

What colours suit a Victorian weatherboard in Ballarat East?

Traditional schemes use a mid-tone body colour (creams, stone, sage, slate) with a darker or lighter trim and a contrasting front door. Heritage paint ranges from the major brands have these. If you want a modern dark body with white trim, that is fine too: there are no colour controls in the residential precincts, only on listed commercial buildings.
