Painters in Nerrina

Painters Ballarat paints houses in Nerrina, a small semi-rural suburb on the north-eastern edge of Ballarat. Most homes here sit on bigger blocks with more exposure to wind and sun than city streets, so exterior coatings work harder. We repaint exteriors, interiors, roofs and outbuildings. Nerrina is about 4 km east of the CBD on the foothills of the Brown Hill range. It was known as Little Bendigo in the goldfields days (the primary school still carries the name) and took the name Nerrina in 1881. Today it is mostly larger residential and rural-living blocks split by the Western Freeway, with a pedestrian bridge linking the two sides.

With fewer than a thousand residents, there is no big estate here. Houses range from older farmhouses and timber cottages to 1970s to 1990s brick homes and newer builds on acreage. Painting work tends to be whole-house exteriors, sheds and fences, and interior repaints for owners who are settling in for the long haul.

Local knowledge

Painting in Nerrina

The suburb backs onto bushland reserves: the Ballarat North Bushland Reserve, Monte Christo Bushland Reserve and the old Childrens Home pine plantation are all in or next to Nerrina, along with the Nerrina Recreation Reserve. That means tree cover, leaf litter in gutters and more shade on south-facing walls, which slows drying and can encourage mould on exteriors.

Being on the range, many blocks are sloping and exposed. Frost sits in the low ground on winter mornings, and the westerly wind comes straight across the paddocks. Exterior paint, especially on north and west faces, fades and chalks faster than it would in a sheltered city street, so good primers and a quality acrylic topcoat matter here.

Nerrina borders Invermay to the north, Black Hill and Ballarat North to the west, and Brown Hill to the south. Glen Park is to the east. The rental rate is low (under 10 per cent of homes), so most of our work is for owner-occupiers who want the job done once and done well.

FAQ

Nerrina painting questions

Does bushland exposure change how you paint in Nerrina?

Yes. We wash down and treat mould on shaded walls before priming, clear gutters and fascias of leaf litter so paint can cure, and pick exterior acrylics with good UV and fungal resistance. On exposed west walls we often recommend a lighter colour, because dark colours on full-sun timber and Colorbond heat up and fade faster.

Can you paint a farm shed or outbuilding as part of the job?

We can. Sheds, carports, water-tank stands and timber fences are common add-ons on Nerrina blocks. Galvanised and Colorbond sheds need the right etch primer or a wash and a roof-and-trim paint system. Bundling them with a house repaint usually works out cheaper than booking them separately.
