Sebastopol was a goldfields town in its own right, with around 20,000 people at its 1850s peak and its own council until 1994. The tram ran down Albert Street from 1913 until buses took over in 1971. Today it is an established, mostly affordable residential suburb of about 10,000 people, with Albert Street as its shopping strip and Phoenix College as its school.
The housing is dominated by detached brick veneer on 600 to 800 square metre blocks, built through the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. These homes are now between 30 and 60 years old and are the bread and butter of our work here: faded eaves and fascias, tired interiors, and roofs that have never been recoated.
Local knowledge
Painting in Sebastopol
The older heritage layer is easy to miss but still there. The Sebastopol heritage study picked out a series of late Victorian timber houses on Albert, Beverin, Bridge, Grant, Kent, Vickers and Yarrowee Streets, and the old weatherboard mine office and manager's house still face each other across Albert Street at numbers 121 and 122. These are the weatherboard jobs in an otherwise brick suburb.
Sebastopol borders Redan and Mount Pleasant to the north, Mount Clear and Magpie to the east, Bonshaw, Ross Creek and Cambrian Hill to the south and west. It is flat and open towards the south, and car dependent; most streets are wide with nature strips and the original cyclone or timber paling fences.
Many homes are rentals or first homes, so we do a lot of quick, tidy interior refreshes alongside full exterior repaints for long-term owners. The Sebastopol Vikings soccer club and the Ballarat Football League side are the local sporting identities.

FAQ
Sebastopol painting questions
What does a full exterior repaint on a 1970s Sebastopol brick veneer involve?
On a brick veneer the painted surfaces are the eaves, fascias, gutters, downpipes, windows, doors, garage door and any render or cladding. We wash down, sand and prime bare spots, replace rotten fascia sections, and apply two coats of exterior acrylic or enamel. Most take three to five days. Face brick itself is usually left unpainted.
Can you recoat my concrete tile roof?
Yes. Concrete tiles lose their surface colour after 20 to 30 years and go porous. We pressure-clean, replace broken tiles, re-bed and re-point ridge capping if needed, then apply a sealer and two coats of roof membrane. It is cheaper than re-roofing and adds many years of life.
