Buninyong was proclaimed a town in June 1851, two months before Thomas Hiscock found gold nearby and set off the district's rush. By 1871 it had 2,281 people and 20 hotels, and the wide streets were laid out for a city that never quite arrived. The Town Hall, the Crown Hotel, Holy Trinity Church and the Botanic Gardens (among Victoria's oldest) are still there.
The street pattern is essentially as surveyed in the early 1850s. Learmonth Street (the Midland Highway) runs east-west and Warrenheip Street, the old gold route from Geelong, runs north-south, with mature elms, oaks and ash along both. Houses range from boom-style Victorian homes in the centre to 1960s to 2000s homes further out, with Mount Buninyong rising behind.
Local knowledge
Painting in Buninyong
The Buninyong heritage precinct (HO181) covers the town centre and, unlike Ballarat's residential precincts, it has external paint controls. That means changing the colour of a building in the precinct, or painting a previously unpainted surface, can need a planning permit from City of Ballarat. Like-for-like repainting in existing colours generally does not. We check the overlay for your address before quoting.
The older housing is Victorian weatherboard and brick, often with verandahs and timber detailing, on generous blocks with established gardens; some streets have individually listed homes such as Netherby on Warrenheip Street with its mature bunya pine. Beyond the centre, towards Mount Helen and Scotsburn, housing is mostly post-war and modern on larger allotments, with some rural-living blocks.
Buninyong borders Mount Helen and Magpie to the north, Navigators and Yendon to the east, and Scotchmans Lead, Durham Lead and Scotsburn to the south. The town has its own football club, golf club and a bowling club founded in 1872, and around 3,800 residents.

FAQ
Buninyong painting questions
Do I need a permit to repaint my house in Buninyong?
It depends on where it is. Inside the Buninyong heritage precinct (HO181) there are external paint controls, so a colour change or painting an unpainted surface can need a planning permit from City of Ballarat. Repainting in the same colours usually does not. Outside the precinct there are no paint controls. We check the overlay for your address first.
How do you handle a shopfront repaint on Learmonth Street?
We confirm the heritage position, then plan the job around trading and the footpath. Timber shopfronts are scraped, repaired and primed, cast-iron verandah posts treated for rust, and signwriting areas masked or repainted to brief. Work can be staged so the shop stays open. We include any permit lead time in the schedule.
Do you paint the newer homes out towards Mount Helen too?
Yes. The houses on the edges of Buninyong are mostly brick veneer and rendered homes from the 1960s onward, with no heritage controls. Those are straightforward exterior and interior repaints, often with a shed, deck or long fence line included. The same free quote and process applies.
