Mount Clear sits about 7 km south of the CBD at the southern end of the White Horse Ranges. Geelong Road runs north-south through it and Whitehorse Road east-west, meeting at the Midvale Shopping Centre. Mount Clear College, Damascus College and two primary schools make it a family suburb, and traffic on the main roads is heavy.

The suburb was a gold mining community from 1857 and had a railway station from 1889 to 1930, but almost all the housing is late 20th century onward. Mid-century and 1970s to 80s brick homes sit on big blocks with mature native trees; newer subdivisions have gone in where pine plantation was cleared in 2011, partly to create a bushfire buffer.

Local knowledge

Painting in Mount Clear

Canadian Creek runs along the eastern edge towards the city, and the terrain is hilly with bush and plantation forestry around it. Woowookarung Regional Park adjoins to the north-east. That setting means shade, leaf litter, possum and bird activity on roofs, and the occasional bushfire overlay, all of which matter when planning an exterior repaint.

Typical houses are brick veneer with tile or Colorbond roofs, timber decks and pergolas to catch the view, and long driveways. Many have had extensions. Interiors are often still in their 1980s or 90s colours and due an update. About 3,700 people live here.

Mount Clear borders Mount Pleasant to the north, Canadian to the north-east, Mount Helen to the south, Magpie to the west and Sebastopol to the north-west. Two bus routes run through at roughly 30-minute intervals.

FAQ

Mount Clear painting questions

My roof has moss and lichen from the trees. Can you still paint it?

Yes, after treatment. We apply a moss and lichen killer, let it work, then pressure-clean the roof back to a sound surface before sealing and coating. Painting over live growth is pointless because it lifts the coating. On heavily shaded roofs we also recommend keeping gutters clear so the new coating can dry properly.

Do you work on homes in bushfire-prone parts of Mount Clear?

Yes. Repainting does not need any bushfire approval. We do take care with exposed timber on decks, posts and eaves, making sure it is sealed and coated properly, and we keep gutters and roof valleys clear before and after roof work. Any structural changes to the house are a separate matter for your builder and council.
