Miners Rest was surveyed in 1854 and had a school by 1858, around the time the Ballarat Turf Club moved its racing to Dowling Forest, a kilometre up the road. It sits north of the Western Freeway and stayed a small farming village for most of its life. Since the 2000s it has grown quickly, with about 3,800 residents at the 2021 census and several estates selling lots.

The township has a primary school, IGA, general store, post office and pub, and Wendouree's shops are ten minutes away. Housing is a mix of older weatherboard and brick homes in the original village streets and modern brick, render and Colorbond homes on the newer estates, usually on larger allotments than you get in the city.

Local knowledge

Painting in Miners Rest

The setting is flat, open volcanic plain with paddocks on every side. Wind and frost are the main things to plan around: westerly winds are unbroken, winter frosts are hard, and summer sun on north and west walls is fierce. Exterior coatings fade and chalk faster here than in tree-lined city streets, and dark Colorbond roofs and fences show it first.

Most blocks have a shed, a carport or both, plus long runs of timber or Colorbond fencing. The older village homes have timber windows and iron roofs that need regular attention; the estate homes are now reaching their first repaint. There is no heritage precinct, though a few individual places (such as the gates at 80 Howe Street) are listed.

Neighbouring localities are Learmonth and Blowhard to the north, Sulky and Windermere to the west, Mount Rowan and Mitchell Park to the east and south, and Wendouree beyond. Cardigan is to the south-west.

FAQ

Miners Rest painting questions

Do you travel out to Miners Rest, and is there a call-out fee?

Yes, Miners Rest is inside our regular service area and there is no call-out fee for quotes. We plan outer jobs so the crew is on site for full days rather than splitting trips, which keeps the price in line with jobs in town. Request a free quote and we will arrange a visit.

Why does paint seem to wear out faster here than in Ballarat proper?

Exposure. Miners Rest is flat and open, so walls get more wind, more dust and more direct sun than sheltered city streets, and frost stresses coatings in winter. Using a premium exterior acrylic at full film build, mid-tone colours on west faces, and washing down every year or two all help the paint last.
